“The Chapter on the Move”

On April 9, 2006, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. welcomed the 981st chapter into its illustrious sisterhood.  North Harris County Alumnae Chapter was the first chapter chartered under Gwendolyn K. Grant, Regional Director of the Blazing Southwest Region.  Assisting Soror Gwendolyn Grant with the chartering ceremony was Texas/New Mexico State Coordinator, Soror Mae Frances Rowlett.  The occasion was also shared by Sorors in the Houston and surrounding chapters.  Seated in Cypress, Texas, the chapter will provide services for Cypress, Jersey Village, Humble, Spring, and Tomball.

For many years, there was an ongoing discussion of the need to establish a new chapter in North Harris County to provide services for the rapidly growing African American population.  In November 2004, Tammica T. Traylor and Monica L. Brown shared their vision of wanting to help meet the needs of the community with several sorors.  In January 2005, an inquiry was made to National Headquarters about the chartering process.  A steering committee was formed to unite sorors who shared the same vision.  Electronic mail and word of mouth began to circulate in the interest of many active and non-active sorors in the efforts of creating this new chapter in North Harris County.

On September 6, 2005, sixty sorors had financially committed to this new endeavor and a charter package was submitted to National Headquarters.  On January 18, 2006, a new year in Delta would finally begin for North Harris County Alumnae Chapter.

North Harris County Alumnae Chapter had already begun implementing their programs that fall under the Sorority’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust. The new chapter hosted its first fundraiser after being chartered for only three weeks and presented the chapter’s first book scholarship to Brittany E. Hill a 2006 graduate from Cypress Falls High School.
